George Thorne could start training again by the end of the week following a hamstring injury but Derby County manager Gary Rowett admits they might have to ease the midfielder back slowly.
Thorne missed all of last season as he recovered from a broken leg suffered in the final league game of the 2015-16 season.
He started pre-season training with the rest of the squad but then picked up a hamstring injury while at the club's training camp in Tenerife last week.
Thorne sat out Tuesday night's opening friendly against National League North side Kidderminster Harriers.
"George had done all of the work over the summer, and he was keen as were the medical team to put him in to training and see how he gets on," Rowett said.

"May be with somebody like George, who had been out for so long, possibly we might have to be a little more patient with his build up.
"We have just got to be a little bit careful with him and make sure we build him up slowly.

"We are treating it as a Grade One hamstring injury and that means seven to 10 days from suffering the injury. So I would imagine by the end of this week he won't be far away from joining in again.
"But I think joining in might have to look a bit different to what it looked previously in terms of doing double sessions like the rest of the players. It might be feed him in for a little portion of the session and see if we can build it up a little bit slower."
